100 Year Celebration
1924-2024
“Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God,
and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me.”
(Isaiah 46:9 NIV)
and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me.”
(Isaiah 46:9 NIV)
We are fortunate to be living in a unique time. October 24, 2024 will be the 100th anniversary of the church. This is an event that will only occur once, and I would like to use this space to briefly talk about the festivities the church is planning.
The Session delegated the responsibility of this celebration to a special planning committee consisting of myself as the chair, Aubrey Anderson, Nancy Barton, Dewitt Elliott, Ashley Hilbourn, Ruth Ann Jones, Libby Marquardt, Matt Riggs, and Jim Roberts. The committee has been meeting since last year and has tried to be efficient, responsible, and fair in coming up with several special celebratory events. Currently the schedule is as follows:
October 12th – “Recognition at the Presbytery of South Carolina Meeting at Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church”
On Saturday morning of this two-day meeting, the Presbytery will pass a resolution recognizing the anniversary of Loris Presbyterian Church. We have been given about 15 minutes during the meeting to speak about our observance of this anniversary. We hope to have some of our pictures and displays at this meeting as well as have Elder Emeritus, Dr. Gwyn McCutchen, tell the story of our history. It would be great if we could have a large number of people from the church in attendance to be recognized at the meeting. If you would like to attend (and I hope you do) let me know because registration will be required.
October 13th – “Music Sunday”
On this day we hope to have the worship service focus on our fabulous musical talent as well as the history of worship music over the last 100 years. This will be held during our regular Sunday morning worship at 10:30 AM.
October 20th – “History Sunday”
On this day we will focus on remembering some more of our history in addition to what we have already shared earlier this year. This will also be held during our regular Sunday morning worship time.
October 27th – “Celebration Sunday”
We are planning for this to be our main celebration event. Former Pastor, Rev. Tom Vandergriff, is planning to attend as the guest speaker. Former Pastor, Rev. Billy Moore, is also planning to be in attendance and will be recognized. We will meet at our regular Sunday morning worship time and a meal will follow the worship service.
As Isaiah points out in the passage above, we are called to remember the past. Sometimes those memories are joyful and sometimes they are not, but they are part of our identity. As we go forward in our individual lives and the life of our church, it is by looking at our past that we can best plan for the future.
Please be in prayer for these celebration events and make plans to attend if possible. If you have any questions or comments, please let a member of the planning committee know.
Have a great month serving Christ,
Pastor Tim
